Zt Prize 2020
The Memory Lane
The subject of the 2020 competition shall be “The Memory Lane”.
The fortress of Kyrenia, which is located in the city of Kyrenia of the island of Cyprus, and has hosted humanity for eight
thousand years, was built in 700 AD by the Byzantines and survived until today with the additions and changes made by the
Byzantines in different periods. Most of the walls of the Kyrenia castle were destroyed after the changing needs in the
development of the city, but the part of the fortress wall, which is the subject of this competition, remained between the
fortress tower and the city's later buildings. A small piece of the wall, bearing the traces and weight of the ancient past... It
survived until today but could not be a part of today. It is as if caught between the past and the present...
Perhaps the walls, by their very nature, are traces of linear spaces that have witnessed the transformation of the urban form
in the past years and have greatly influenced the memory of the entire city. They reveal memories, where reality ends, and
imagination and fantasy begin. Magical realism… As you wander through the city, you suddenly hear laughter and languages
of different periods from this tiny and ancient ruin of the castle, which was used by Byzantine, Lusignan, Venetian, Ottoman
and British.
Currently, the fortress wall and tower are included in the national inventory and described as cultural heritage, yet they
continue to exist like a stranger left alone in the city life.
The subject of the competition is a design proposal that will reveal the potentials to establish, bring together, and unite this
fortress wall with the city and today's life.
While preserving the urban historical heritage;
bringing a new perspective to the relationship between people and their visual, historical, and physical environment,
questioning and shaping the city's spirit and culture in the context of the past, the present, and the future,
focusing on the understanding and appraising of people's urban memory is expected.
"Touching a part of the earth, carrying what it conveys to today's world, is the suggestion of your journey to your inner world
through design. It is also a suggestion that you question your own personality while questioning the design." (Z.Tanalı).
Competitors are expected to create suggestions that go beyond physical needs and convey mental and spiritual needs while
designing the relationship of the wall with the city.
